The Club is pleased to announce the first of its coaching appointments for season 2021.

First up Tony Liberatore has been appointed as Men's Over 50s Coach. Libba, an accredited Level 2 AFL Coach, joined the club in 2018 and has always been on hand to provide advice to players and coaches alike. Now he will take the reigns of the Legends!

Joining Libba as the Men's Over 50s Assistant Coach will be life member Frank Veri. Frank has had previous coaching stints at Coburg over his 14-year journey at the club and will now make excellent support to Tony.

Katie Annetta, better known as "Chops" has been reappointed to the role of Women's Over 35s Coach after her debut season as coach was foiled due to COVID-19. Chops is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

We would like to take this opportunity congratulate Tony, Frank and Katie on their appointments.

Transgender Guidelines For AFL Masters Vic Metro

18/3/2020

The AFL Masters Vic Metro Board released their guidelines for season 2020 in regard to Transgender Players on the March 11, 2020 as follows:

The following is the cover email received from the General Manager of AFLVM

Vic Metro have been constantly requesting guidance from the AFL about a Transgender Policy.

We have been informed that the Policy has been written, but is awaiting approval from Their Board.

Our League made a commitment to have a policy in place for 2020, so the Executive Directors and Football Department have drafted the attached Permit for the immediate future.

Your Club can now register Transgender Players, subject to them reading and agreeing in writing to the attached Permit conditions.

The following is the guidelines received from AFLVM:

AFLVM Guideline for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in AFLVM gender specific matches

Introduction and Background

In 2019, the AFL Masters Victorian Metropolitan Superules Football League Inc and affiliated clubs (AFLVM) received
a formal request from one of its competing clubs to issue a permit for a transgender club member to play in the Women’s competition.

The request highlighted that the AFLVM need to implement guidelines to clubs on how we can be inclusive of transgender and gender diverse people while also protecting the health and safety of all players and the AFLVM values underpinning footy for fun.

AFLVM declined the player a permit for the remainder of the 2019 season pending the development of an appropriate AFLVM rule for the 2020 season and beyond at which time AFLVM would review the player’s request.

In 2019 the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), Sport Australia and the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (of which the AFL is a member) (COMPPS)issued Guidelines
for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport (the Guidelines).  For ease of reference, this publication can be found on the AHRC’s website at https://www.humanrights.gov.au/our-work/publications.

The AHRC Guidelines are all encompassing and the AFLVM and our clubs already generally comply relating to inclusion of transgender people in a non-discriminatory way.

This guideline will focus only on the question of whether a transgender person should be issued with a permit to play in a team of their choosing.

AFLVM Position in Principle

The AFLVM in developing rules for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in AFLVM gender specific matches will have regard to the following Principles:

  • As much as possible align the AFLVM position with that of the policies and guidelines adopted by the AFL from time to time
  • To comply with its legal obligations under the federal Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Act)
  • To maximise the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in our game.
  • Protect the health and safety of all players
  • Adhere to AFLVM values underpinning footy for fun
Current Situation

With AFLVM 2020 season upon us and with the AFL “Community” Football transgender policy release further delayed, the Board proposes an interim permit be issued to transgender and gender diverse people wishing to play in the team of their choosing subject to the following criteria being met:
  • The applicant meets the minimum age requirement (i.e. 35 years or older in the season in which the permit is sought) to register as an AFLVM player.
  • The applicant acknowledges and accepts that some clubs may not have appropriate facilities (change rooms, showers, toilets etc) in place and some compromise may be necessary to accommodate all players’ needs.
  • The applicant acknowledges that the AFLVM places footy for fun and the health and safety of participants ahead of winning and this is reflected in the modified rules, harsh penalties for unfair play and encouraging a culture of inclusion and social engagement.
  • The applicant acknowledges and accepts the Board reserves the right to assess each application individually and on its own merits based on the attached Application Form.
Next Steps

The AFLVM wishes to ultimately establish rules and criteria for determining eligibility of transgender and gender diverse people wishing to play in the AFLVM that are consistent with the AFL and community football generally.  Therefore, it reserves the right to amend this interim guideline in the future including how eligibility may be assessed.

The funeral for Peter will be held at Plenty Arts & Convention Centre, 35 Ferres Blvd, South Morang on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 10.30am.

3/9/2019

AFL Masters Vic Metro released the final best & fairest vote tallies for season 2019. We already know that Craig McKay took out the Over 45’s best and fairest by the slenderest of margins in a very tight voting block. Here’s the breakdown for Coburg.

In the Women’s Cath Rees continued her consistent form topping the vote count.

Craig Muir, Joe Basilone and Carlo Renna were equal leaders for Coburg in the Over 50’s. Don’t be surprised if all three poll well for the club best & fairest award.

The Over 45’s was tight with the winner, as previously mentioned, Craig Mckay on 12 votes. Tony Callea finished 4th, while Bruno Scuilli, Mark Gillman and John Haddad all had top 10 finishes.

The runners up honours in the Reserves was shared by Kane O’Brien and Shane Frederickson, two obvious candidates that would have taken votes off each other throughout the season. Richard Collins finished equal 4th and Carlo Federico equal 5th.

The Supers had two stand outs at the top of the tally both from other clubs and then there was daylight with a packed list in which Tony Liberatore finished equal 5th.

The AFL Masters Vic Metro League announced their league awards on Monday evening post semi-finals weekend. Coburg players featured in the awards.

Craig McKay took out the Over 45's North League Best & Fairest. He polled 12 votes throughout the season. The midfielder had a great season and will likely go very close to winning the club best and fairest in 2019. Congratulations Macca.

It's also congratulations to Adam Lewis who has now officially been crowned Over 35's Premier Division Reserves Leading Goal Kicking with 28 majors for the season. Despite a slow start he twice kicked a bag of 5-goals in rounds 8 and 10 to have his best season in front of goals for a quite a while.

Picture
It's NAIDOC week. NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday, this year 7-14 July.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces. Coburg FC participated in the VFL's NAIDOC round in their match against Essendon on Sunday and are making their NAIDOC design jumpers available for purchase CLICK HERE

Within our own club we have an individual who has been recognised as a champion of diversity, social justice and equality, the partner of Women's Over 35 player Ebony O'Dwyer, Dean Duncan has been named National NAIDOC person of the year in 2019.

Dean was the recipient of the award at the National Awards Ceremony in Canberra on Saturday. Big congratulations to Dean.

Paul Pitman To Overhaul Milestone

9/7/2019

Paul Pitman, Life Member, Hall of Famer, former President, currently Coach of the Over 45's...the list goes on. He has accomplished plenty but now is he is on the verge of breaking a long standing record, that of the club games record.

Currently an equally famous member of our club Allan "Tappa" Mathews holds the record with 179 club games under his belt. Tappa played his last and 179th game in Round 4 on the 29th of May 2011 and has held this record since then.

On Sunday, barring some mishap this week, Paul Pitman, will don the number 17 and take to the field to break Allan Mathews long standing record and become the holder of the most games played.

Given that the Over 45's are playing away this Sunday the club plans to celebrate this significant milestone in Round 9, when the Paul's chargers take on Chirnside Park at Coburg City Oval.

Around The Grounds November

30/11/2017

At Coburg Superules it's all about keeping you informed in the off-season, here's a little segment we've cobbled together letting you know what's been going on off field...

Will Jesser changed his Facebook profile photo prompting claims that he has had post season cosmetic surgery. We all know Factor is no walking advert for Nivea Men but a facelift?

Speaking of surgery, how juiced up did our President look after his knee clean out operation a recently. It is rumoured that he was so out of it on a cocktail of prescribed pain killers that the league were considering an Essendon like investigation into the Superules supplements program not to mention that he went back to work auctioning off a house in Resa for record price only to find he’d taken bids on the seller’s next door neighbours house which wasn’t on the market!

And the surgery theme continues after it was reported that Mick Egan has been considering going under the knife for a testicle donation. He’s already knocked a tribe full of little tackers so at $70k a pair why not?

Adam and Michelle Lewis and their three kids celebrated 8 years of marital bliss this month. It’s a credit to Michelle and her resilience and we congratulate to her for putting up with him for an extended period as most of us at Coburg Superules can only handle him in small doses. Now the story is that Helmet took Shell out for late night surprise Foreman Grill meal in the lounge room to celebrate followed by a couple of drumsticks for dessert. We just say a big congratulations!

Meanwhile Bananas Branagan, has been doing a bit of promo work for the club on the beaches of Queensland.  Mr Movember was seen sunny himself wearing only his Coburg Superules branded shorts and sporting his designer stubble moustacher up on the Sunshine Coast. Ok, here’s the real plug
DONATE HERE!

And what about the efforts Sam Di Falco and Craig McKay, these two fitness nut jobs have been burning up the track in the off season.

The often controversial TV critic, political antagonistic and sometimes football analyst Sam Di Falco has traded his Bachelorette time for Nikes and churned out 4.28 minute kilometres in the 15km City2Sea fun run. That’s whoop ass speed and in comparison to Frank Massara’s runkeeper post indicating 7.02 minutes per kilometre, Sam makes Frank look like a sloth!

Whilst not Di Falco’s partner in crime, Craig “Macca” McKay is of the same ilk. The self-confessed fitness tragic, athletic freak and back pocket plumber, completed the grueling Shepparton Challenge Triathlon in the 45-49 years of age category in 5 hours, 40 minutes and 39 seconds, finishing 26th in his category, not bad first up. I mean we think, of course, there better ways to spend our time and we’d probably be saying that’s 6 hours of our lives that we won’t get back but hey well done Macca!

We will soon be seeing the preseason headlines “McKay and Di Falco training the house down”, then we got to thinking…a preseason challenge?…can you see it now?...Di Falco v McKay?

And yes, we do love headline and if we are talking about amazing feats then one cannot go past, the human headline (or at least the human headline of Facebook), Troy “Selfie” Jones. He took another step towards fame after he claimed the coveted gold medal in the Essendon Wine Bar dance off. It was a hard fought contest but judges stated that his signature “shake your tushy” move got him home on points.

Finally has anyone seen Saddo’s B&F runner up trophy? It was last seen doing the rounds and being used as prop in selfies at the same venue that Jonesy danced his way to success. If anyone does find it, please return it with a tube of super strength araldite.

And that’s the November wrap, see you at preseason…

Coburg Bows Out Of The Finals

28/8/2017

Coburg’s history making season came to an end on Sunday as both the Supers and Reserves bowed out in the Semi Finals.

The Supers effort couldn’t be questioned but Marcellin were cleaner in transition and were able to navigate the congestion and spread better than Coburg.

Coburg took it up to Marcellin after the main break and attacked relentlessly without reward or scoreboard pressure in third term.

A 46-point loss is hardly the reflective of the match with Marcellin landing a handful of junk time goals late in the game. Coburg will be better for the experience and will go into the 2018 season with momentum.

A brief hail storm greeted the Reserves in the early game against Parkdale where Coburg were 2-points down and within striking distance at ¾ time in a low scoring affair before Parkdale’s endeavour got the better of Coburg in the last stanza. Injuries to Mick Noble and Carlo Federico didn’t help their cause as they went down by 15-points.

Disappointing day for Mick Noble and Pete Cummins who were playing their 100th and 50th games for the club respectively but all in all Coburg achieved this season’s objective of making finals. This stands the club in good stead for a tilt at the premiership in 2018. All players and officials of club should be proud of their effort, commitment and selflessness throughout the season.

The season will wind up with Mad Friday (TBA) and Presentation Night on the 28th of October 2017.

Coburg Storm Into The Finals

13/8/2017

In a massive day for the club, Coburg Supers secured a finals berth and retained the Foundation Cup in a 104-point drubbing of Ascot Vale in the final home and away match, the “Love Me Love You” round.

Love Me Love You Founder Lance Piciaone was on hand to present the trophy to Coburg Captain Mark Gillman and Coach Adam Bruni.

Coburg finished third and will take on Marcellin in the Semi Final in two weeks time at Croft’s Reserve, Altona North. It will be Coburg’s first finals appearance since 2010.

The Reserves who were celebrating Mark “Hotdog” Medley’s 50th game for the club annihilated Ascot Vale by 123-points a which broke the record for the highest winning margin and the highest winning score in Reserve Grade.

In a season full of “firsts” for the club, both Coburg Supers and Reserves are through to the finals and, for the first time in the club’s history the 2’s make the first finals appearance.

The Reserves also finished third on percentage and face Parkdale in the Semi Final.

Despite a great effort the Over 50’s were unable to make it three wins for the club and send Ray “Razor” Ransome who played his 150th for the club out a winner.

They went down to Ascot Vale by 28-points with Ray announcing his retirement from playing after this year’s AFL Masters carnival.

Paul Pitman was proud of the way his chargers went about it during the season and will be hoping for an improved showing with a few more players to graduate to Over 50’s ranks in 2018.

Coburg’s march to the finals continues unabated with comprehensive victories from both the Supers and Reserves.

The Supers demolished Diamond Valley by 89-points in a clinical display in which Michael Salloum kicked 5 and was well supported by Ash Flavel, Fab Carelli and Tony Lombardi (making a welcome return) with 3 a-piece. Duane Bruni celebrated his 50th game for the club with 2-goals.

Mick Noble led the way with an 8-goal haul as the Reserves controlled their match from start to finish and simply outran and outplayed their opponents running out winners by 111-points. Adam Lewis also hit the scoreboard with 5-goals.

There are no certainties in football and both teams, third and third respectively, will need to be at their best to finish off the good work and lock away a finals berth in the final round. The Supers will also be looking to go back to back in the annual “Love Me, Love You” Cup against Ascot Vale.

The injury struck Over 50’s battle hard against tough opposition eventually going down by 54-points.

Coburg Inch Closer To A Finals Berth

2/7/2017

Adam Fenton kicked three on debut as the Supers forced their way into the four with a strong 20-point win over Frankston. Even more pleasing was the four quarter performance and the contribution from every player against very good opposition. It’s up to the team to cement their spot in the finals from here on in.

Adam Lewis bagged four goals as the Reserves locked themselves into second place on the ladder with win an important 44-point defeat of Frankston. A great afternoon had by Dave Pengelly who celebrated his 50th game for the club as the Reserves put on their most consistent four quarters for the season and kept Frankston goalless for three quarters.

Nothing is ever certain but another win should see the Reserves lock up a place in the finals for the first time in the club’s history.

It wasn’t a great result for the Over 50’s who went down by 23-points in what was an injury plagued morning the worst of all 100+ game player Barry Saunders going down with a nasty shoulder dislocation. Despite leading by 7-points at half time, the attrition through injury told and they weren’t able to pull off a for Jimmy Boudsingkhone who played his 50th game for the club.

Next round, round 8 we are away to Beaconsfield.

How The Mighty Have Fallen

18/6/2017

Anyone who questioned the evenness of the competition in 2017 can just take a look at round 6. The once mighty Essendon sunk to bottom. Marcellin where bought back to earth with a thud by Williamstown. Beaconsfield and Plenty Valley pushed Parkdale and Frankston respectively all day. The competition for places in the four are wide open.

But let’s get back Coburg and what a great day for the club! Three wins across the three grades against Essendon, a FIRST. Reserve (Masters) grade defeat Essendon a FIRST. The Supers win by 48-points their highest winning margin against Essendon.

The Supers started well but gifted Essendon some opportunities to keep them in the game up until half-time. A 6-goal burst in the third quarter saw Coburg take a commanding lead into the last term. They dropped off in intensity but still managed to keep Essendon goalless and win by 48-points.

Ashley Flavel kicked 7-goals on debut and while Fabian Carelli won “the cans” in an excellent debut performance.

The Reserves kept their noses in front for the entire day but tapered off in the second half hanging on to win by 10-points. It wasn’t their best performance but it was enough to overcome Essendon, a determined effort but lacking consistency. That makes it four in a row for the Reserves and clear third on the ladder (equal second).

Speaking of determined the Over 50’s we’re victorious in a very tight contest against old rivals Essendon by 3-points. The 50’s led by 9-points at the last change and had to be brave as Essendon threw everything at Coburg even heading them deep into the last term but, in his first game back for some time Vin Taranto kicked the winning goal to snatch a great victory.

All match details and stats below.

In round 7 Coburg host Frankston at Piranha Park. For the Supers this is a vital match and a big opportunity to get into the four. For the Reserves it’s an opportunity to cement themselves in the four.
