Vic Metro Best & Fairest TalliesTuesday, 3 September 2019
AFL Masters Vic Metro released the final best & fairest vote tallies for season 2019. We already know that Craig McKay took out the Over 45’s best and fairest by the slenderest of margins in a very tight voting block. Here’s the breakdown for Coburg.
In the Women’s Cath Rees continued her consistent form topping the vote count. Craig Muir, Joe Basilone and Carlo Renna were equal leaders for Coburg in the Over 50’s. Don’t be surprised if all three poll well for the club best & fairest award. The Over 45’s was tight with the winner, as previously mentioned, Craig Mckay on 12 votes. Tony Callea finished 4th, while Bruno Scuilli, Mark Gillman and John Haddad all had top 10 finishes. The runners up honours in the Reserves was shared by Kane O’Brien and Shane Frederickson, two obvious candidates that would have taken votes off each other throughout the season. Richard Collins finished equal 4th and Carlo Federico equal 5th. The Supers had two stand outs at the top of the tally both from other clubs and then there was daylight with a packed list in which Tony Liberatore finished equal 5th. |

The AFL and AFL Victoria have pledged $500,000 for the redevelopment of Coburg City OvalWednesday, 28 August 2019
The Coburg City Oval redevelopment project is set to upgrade and refurbish the grandstand pavilion facility to make it an iconic premier football facility within the City of Moreland and is being developed in partnership with the Victorian Government and Moreland City Council.
The $6.75 million redevelopment will benefit the Coburg Football Club, West Coburg Football Club, Coburg Masters Football Club, Coburg FIDA team, Coburg Auskick and the Essendon and District Football League, as well as a range of other community groups. Enhancements to the facility includes major improvements to the changerooms and amenities to upgrade to contemporary state league standards including catering to both female and male participants. The project will also provide a new community/function room, refurbished grandstand seating and public toilets. |
The facility will provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for women, driving increased female participation.
By promoting diversity and inclusion, the exciting redevelopment will support player, umpire and administrator pathways and ensure the growth of junior participation by setting a clear talent pathway with the Coburg Lions who are based at Coburg City Oval.
Head of AFL Victoria Rick Bell said the redevelopment is set to benefit a broad range of football stakeholders from Auskick through to the VFL.
“We’re excited to see the range of groups that will benefit from this redevelopment. These State League facilities are so important to many football stakeholders and provide a real beacon for football in these regions, not only hosting VFL games, but provide opportunities at local level and as an important EDFL Finals venue.
“We’re proud to be assisting in the redevelopment to make Coburg City Oval an iconic football hub in Melbourne’s north, and these improvements will undoubtedly support participation numbers for both males and females and from Auskick all the way through the pathway to the VFL,” Mr. Bell said.
General Manager of Coburg Football Club Sebastian Spagnuolo said the new facility at Coburg City Oval will benefit the wider football community for many years.
“We can’t wait to show off our new home once the project is complete.
“The upgraded facility will continue to allow our club to provide fantastic football opportunities in a modern facility, which caters more appropriately to females and people of all abilities which our club values deeply.
“The Coburg Football Club is so thankful for the AFL and AFL Vic’s investment into the Coburg City Oval facility project. Having the AFL and AFL Vic join both the State Government and Moreland City Council as project contributors and partners, provides our club with great assurance that our standing as the community’s peak sporting club is appreciated and respected enough to invest into,” he said.
AFL Victoria would like to thank the Victorian Government and Moreland City Council for their investment into the precinct.
Throughout the past 12 months, the AFL has worked closely with State and Local Government, to help contribute to football facilities across the State with an overall total project cost of over $95 million, developing over 60 facilities in Regional Victoria and Metropolitan Melbourne.

First images and construction date revealed for Coburg City OvalSunday, 25 August 2019, Article by Josh Barnes, North West Leader
The heritage listed 94-year-old grandstand at Coburg City Oval is set for a stunning $6.65m redevelopment, which is set to change the face of one of the VFL’s most tired venues. Take a look at the first images and see when it will start.
The Coburg Lions will hit the road for season 2020 as a long-awaited $6.65 million redevelopment of the heritage-listed grandstand at Coburg City Oval takes place. The 1925 grandstand will be renovated from February and upgraded with new unisex change rooms, an umpires’ room, a new gym and rebuilt social rooms. It is expected to take about 18 months. The red brick of the grandstand is heritage listed and will be retained in the work to be overseen by Moreland Council. A glass elevator will be installed to provide access to a 200-person function space with full length windows overlooking the action on the oval. The council and State Government both chipped in $3 million to the project, with the AFL offering $500,000 and Cricket Victoria $175,000. Coburg Football Club general manager Seb Spagnuolo said the club had been planning the refurbishment for more than a decade. He said he was hopeful the ground could be in the running for VFL finals or marquee under-18 games after the works. “The venue will allow us to compete with our rivals in terms of recruiting and player retention,” he said. “It has been harder for us to recruit with what we’ve had compared to other clubs … but moving forward, to know it’s a venue we’re really proud of and can show that off, it will be great.” He said the works would also allow the club to launch an elite female program in 2021. The ground is also home to the Coburg Cricket Club. |
President Darren Scott said the club was excited about the opportunities the works would bring.
Moreland Council welcomed the investment from both the AFL and Cricket Victoria.
Mayor Natalie Abboud said the renovations would allow increased disability access to open up the ground to users of all types.
Mr Spagnuolo said the football club would hit the road throughout the season next year, with plans to play home games in Preston, Craigieburn, Colac, Ballarat, Bendigo and Melton.
Those fixtures won’t be confirmed until December.
“We see these games as a positive that will galvanise the group and create a closer bond for the players and coaches,” he said.
“We’re really excited to take VFL footy to regions that don’t see our level of footy anymore.”
